Insurance

I do not accept direct payment from health insurance in my practice for two reasons:

First, the insurance system is built on the premise that the aim of mental health treatment is to cure or manage symptoms of mental illnesses. What is considered mental illness is culturally defined and changes over time. For example, homosexuality was defined as a mental illness up until 1973! In my view, the patterns that get in the way of well-being are meant to be adaptive or protective in some way, and actually were in an earlier context. We are all taking care of ourselves, and we can do that in ways that are conscious or unconscious. The old programs that are operating outside of our conscious awareness are the ones that are no longer serving us.

The second reason I do not accept payment from insurance companies is the compromise to confidentiality. The implications of having a diagnosed mental disorder as part of one’s electronic medical record, which of course cannot be guaranteed secure, make me uncomfortable, particularly when such diagnoses seem primarily to exist for the purpose of payment.

I completely respect your right to be in charge of your own privacy. If your health insurance plan offers out-of-network reimbursement, your situation meets criteria for a diagnosis, and you are comfortable with such, I am happy to provide you with a “superbill” which contains the information required to seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

Payment

I accept cash, check and all major credit cards as forms of payment.
